Why is American beer called Pilsner?

I know a little about beer making. I know that ales use a top fermenting yeast and that lagers us a bottom fermenting yeast. I also know that commercial beers made in the USA are lagers but I have also ran into instances where Americans beers seem to be put into their own cl called Pilsners. Please explain what a pilsner is.
