Is it possible for a U.S. citizen to change their name while residing outside the U.S.?

I'm an American citizen, born in Ohio, currently living in Germany. I need to change my first name. Is it possible? Where can I find information about this kind of situation? Everything I've read so far only deals with persons living in the U.S. For obvious reasons, I can't just go to the county courthouse. I have no plans to return to the states any time soon, and this is something that I need to do A.S.A.P. Advice anyone?
